1988 Anime Oishinbo Now on YouTube with English Subtitles

The 1988 anime series Oishinbo is being uploaded to an official YouTube channel with English subtitles.

Originally reported by Comic Natalie, Oishinbo follows Yamaoka Shiro and Kurita Yuko. The pair are journalists for the Tozai Shinbun newspaper in its Culture section. Together, the two are tasked with working on an “Ultimate Menu” project for their news organization.


The series began in 1983 and was created by writer-artist duo Kariya Tetsu and Hanasaki Akira. In 1988 the series received an anime adaptation on Nippon TV from Shin-Ei Animation and Studio Deen. The series ended in 1992 after over 100 episodes.

According to Comic Natalie, episodes of Oishinbo will be uploaded to YouTube on a Monday, Wednesday, Friday schedule for the month of October before being reduced to a Wednesday and Friday schedule. The intention is to release all 121 episodes of the Oishinbo in its digitally remastered format.

Oishinbo was put on indefinite hiatus in 2014 in response to controversy surrounding the author’s portrayal of the effects of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Disaster.
