Live-Action Akira Remake Director Says Movie is Still Getting Made

Despite being postponed indefinitely, live-action Akira film director Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit, Thor: Ragnarok, Hunt for the Wilder People) has noted the movie is still happening.

Waititi states in a new interview (via IGN) that he’s focused on the production of Thor 4, but the remake is still on the table and they do not plan to give up on the project. When the movie was put on hold, it was reportedly due to creative differences, which Waititi confirms in the interview.

“Because we were working really hard on the script, we had to keep pushing the start date for the shoot. We ended up having to push it a couple weeks too far, which actually ate into the Thor schedule. They were very close together,” Waititi said.

He added, “It got pushed again and again, it just got too far into the Thor schedule to make it work. So now we had to take Akira and sort of shift it around to the tail-end of Thor and move it down a couple years. So yeah, we’ll make it.”

Whether it’ll live up to the hype, I guess we’ll all have to wait and see! What’s your favorite thing about Akira that you’ve seen in other anime that was obviously inspired by it? Sound off in the comments below!
