YuruYuri to Receive Isekai Fantasy Spinoff Manga

Originally an April Fool’s Day joke, Namori’s Yuruyuri will have an isekai spinoff manga series.

The news comes via the June issue of Comic Yuri Hime magazine (via Anime News Network). The isekai fantasy spinoff series was originally teased as an April Fools joke by the official twitter for YuruYuri. The main cast takes on fantasy job roles, while central character Akari Akaza becoming a slime monster.

The joke was positively received, with fans like Twitter user “wabi_kari” stating “Akari-chan is cute, even when changed into a slime”. However, fans at the time had no way of knowing the joke was a legitimate teaser until now.

The spinoff will be titled Tensei Shitara Akari dake ga Slime Datta Ken, which appears to be a reference to the popular Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken series; the latter is better known as That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime in the west.

The main series of YuriYuri is an ongoing title serialized in Comic Yuri Hime, a magazine for Yuri and Girls’ Love manga intended for a female audience since 2008, and continues to this day.

YuruYuri follows the daily lives of the Amusement Club at Nanamori Middle School. The club consists of four friends, Akari Azaka, Yui Funami, Kyoko Toshino, and Chinatsu Yoshikawa. An anime series came out in 2012 from studio Doga Kobo, and numerous one-off OVAs and shorter spin-off series have continued to 2019.

The most recent of these was the OVA Yuru Yuri,- the comma sounding like the English word “ten.” This was to celebrate the series’ 10th anniversary.

While the original YuruYuri series is done by the artist Namori, the spinoff series will be drawn by Naya Minadori. While no official release date for Tensei Shitara Akari dake ga Slime Datta Ken has been announced, the series will be serialized in the Wednesday’s Sirius section of Nico Nico Seiga.
