The premiere date of the upcoming Higurashi When They Cry remake has been announced, alongside a new trailer.

The new trailer shows clips from the upcoming remake of Higurashi When They Cry, along with broadcast dates and stations for the Japanese premiere. The new series will be a remake of the 2006 anime series, and the latest anime adaptation of Higurash since the Higurashi no Naku Koro ni: Outbreak OVA in 2013.

Higurashi When They Cry began as a visual novel in 2002 by the circle 07th Expansion. A manga adaptation began in 2005 which was written by Ryukishi07, the pen name of the leader of 07th Expansion.

The story takes place in the fictional 1980s village of Hinamizawa, where Keiichi Maebara has just moved to, and he soon makes friends with his classmates. The upcoming Watanagashi Festival to give thanks to the deity Oyashiro is tinged with misery however. For the past four years people have been killed or gone missing on the eve of the festival.

After the latest deaths, Maebara digs into the mystery. Paranoia among him and his friends rises to a fever pitch, and what is real begins to crumble away.

Since its debut, Higurashi When They Cry has received multiple OVAs, a 2009 live action film, and even a 2016 TV drama. 07th Expansion went on to create another installment of the series titled Umineko When They Cry, which also received an anime adaptation. The anime adaptations for both Higurashi and Umineko were handled by Studio Deen.

The voice cast from the original visual novel and the 2006 anime will be reprising their roles in the upcoming remake.
