One Piece Teases Inevitable Final Arc

The long running series One Piece recently teased that the “final arc” for the series will be coming, drawing a close to the over 20 year running title.

LRM Online reports, a recent issue of Weekly Shonen Jump teased that One Piece will be facing its final arc. Though saying the end is coming soon for the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy is a bit premature.

For those who are not familiar, One Piece follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy. Luffy’s a happy go lucky young man who in his youth admired the pirate captain “Red Haired” Shanks, who rescued him as a boy.

Declaring that he will become the King of the Pirates and find Gold Roger’s treasure, Luffy sets off on a grand adventure to recruit the most elite pirate crew that he can, and set sail on the mysterious sea route called the Grand Line.

The popularity of the series kicked off in the United States when Viz Media began releasing their own English Shonen Jump, featuring titles like Dragon Ball Z, Naruto, and others in addition to premiering One Piece in the US. Originally the localization of the anime was handled by 4Kids TV, but since then has been released by Funimation.

The series has been running for 23 years already, with creator Eiichiro Oda saying last year that he intended the series to run for at least another five.

Beginning in 1997, One Piece is one of the most popular and long-running series in anime, beaten largely by low runtime series like Sazae-san, and trailing just behind Detective Conan in terms of episode count.

In the recent arcs of the series, Luffy and the Strawhat Pirates have been going toe to toe with the Four Emperors, such as Big Mom and Kaido. The end of Luffy’s quest to become King of the Pirates feels like it is in sight.
