Waifu Wednesday: Elma

Elma Waifu Wednesday

Welcome to Waifu Wednesday, Nicchiban’s weekly column where we talk about anime characters, their appeal, and a little on their history.

Today on Waifu Wednesday, Elma from Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid! Elma holds a unique place in the series as the only main character that’s part of the “Order” faction of dragons.

Elma’s biggest charm point is the way her personality can drastically sway between serious and airheaded, especially when food is involved. This gives her a unique and vital role in the comedic chemistry of the series, rather than being deadpan all the time (like Fafnir) or rambunctious and thoughtless (like Tohru), Elma is able to be whatever the scene desires.

As a member of the Order faction, Elma’s able to keep a level head which helps her when she begins working in Kobayashi’s company, a feat that would likely be impossible for any of the other dragons. She does have a soft spot for good food and her gluttony is the frequent butt of jokes.

Though her screentime is limited, Elma regularly steals the show in any of her appearances.

Physically, Elma’s a happy medium between Lucoa and Tohru, though it might be easy to say that only because we see so much of Tohru in the series. But for fans who like Lucoa but aren’t a fan of how tall she is, Elma’s an excellent choice of waifu from the series.

Ultimately, Elma provides a refreshing perspective in Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid. She shakes up the friend group of Lucoa, Kanna, and Tohru (Fafnir also fills this role but his sort of humor is different) and makes an impact.

Elma’s arguably a tomboyish sort of waifu, her tight clothing and office lady outfit provide a different sort of appeal than Tohru’s maid outfit.
