Demon Slayer Becomes Shueisha’s 2nd Highest-Selling Manga in 2019

Shueisha have revealed that Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba was their second highest-selling manga in 2019 so far, only rivaled by One Piece.

The latest latest Oricon sales reveal that Koyoharu Gotouge’s Demon Slayer had sold a total of 1,114,530 volumes in Japan this year. By comparison, Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece sold 1,252,449 in the same period of time.

While One Piece has been the top-selling manga on-and-off in Japan since 2000 (being beaten out some years by Vagabond, Nana, and Death Note), some have begin to speculate if Demon Slayer will achieve it this year. The manga also achieved a Guinness World Record in 2015: “the most copies published for the same comic book series by a single author.”

Demon Slayer‘s most recent volume (volume 17) has achieved series-high sales of 368,502 in its first week, with it being reportedly being sold out in many places in Japan. The manga launched in Weekly Shonen Jump in February 2016, with Viz Media publishing the manga in English.

This meteoric upward trajectory was noted by Otakomu. As noted on the graph below, Demon Slayer‘s total sales by volume 17 have surpassed My Hero Academia and Bleach when they had sold their 17th volumes.

It should be noted the graph only shows sale sup to the 23rd volume. One Piece‘s 95th volume will ship on December 28th, and is set to help the manga achieve 460 million copies overall worldwide (390 million in Japan, and 70 million from other territories).
