The latest Neon Genesis Evangelion film from director Anno Hideaki has surpassed Shin Godzilla in the box office, making it his highest grossing film to date.
According to a recent tweet, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time has grossed over 8.28 billion Japanese yen and been seen by over 5.4 million people. This breaks Anno’s previous record with Shin Godzilla which grossed 8.25 billion yen in theaters.

Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time is the latest installment of the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise after 2012’s Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo.
The latest film has been delayed twice due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and was originally intended to premiere in June 2020 before being pushed to January 2021. The film was once again delayed due to the State of Emergency that Japan was undergoing in January 2021 before finally premiering on March 8th.
An English premiere date for Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time has yet to be announced, though it’s worth noting that film distributor GKIDS currently holds the theatrical rights to the Evangelion franchise in North America.
