Live-Action Akira Movie Further Postponed for Matrix 4

The live-action Akira movie has had it’s release date entirely removed, with Matrix 4 taking its place.

Hollywood Reporter reports that the as of yet untitled Matrix film (tentitively dubbed Matrix 4) will premier May 21st, 2021. While Akira was set to release on that date, it has now been “undated” with no date at all.

The director Taika Waititi is also working on Thor: Love and Thunder, so it may be that either the project has been halted until Taika has finished his work on that film, or Waititi is no longer working on Akira.

The former is more likely, as even though the film was once postponed indefinitely, it was later announced by Waititi that while he was working on Thor: Love and Thunder, the film was still getting made.

It seems this may still be the case, though the delay is no less quizzical. Hollywood Reporter states that Matrix 4 will now release the same day as John Wick: Chapter 4. Does this mean Warner Bros. have more faith in the Matrix than Akira to topple John Wick?
