One Piece Celebrates 20th Anniversary With Romance Dawn Anime Adaption

The official One Piece website has announced a one-shot anime adaption of One Piece‘s earlier iterations: Romance Dawn.

Romance Dawn refers to two short stories written by Eiichiro Oda. While Oda sketched pirate themed ideas from as young as the first-year junior high school, the idea took more shape once he began working as an assistant to Rurouni Kenshin author Nobuhiro Watsuki.

The first version was published in WJ Summer Special magazine in 1996. The second was also published the same year in Weekly Shonen Jump, with the final incarnation (renamed One Piece) published exactly one year later. Some fans also call the first story arc of One Piece the Romance Dawn arc (though others call it the Captain Morgan arc).

The WJ Summer Special version was adapted in 2018 as One Piece: Romance Dawn Story. It altered elements so it would fit into the One Piece canon, between the Thriller Bark and Sabaody Archipelago arcs.

The official website notes it will be adapting WANTED: Romance Dawn, and that it is the “first adaption” of Romance Dawn. This most likely means the adaption will be of the version originally published in Shonen Jump, which also later appeared in the Wanted! short story collection.

Romance Dawn will broadcast on October 20th – the same day as the anime’s anniversary.
