Waifu Wednesday: Kiryu Coco

Kiryu Coco

Welcome to Waifu Wednesday, Nicchiban’s weekly column where we talk about anime characters, their appeal, and a little on their history.

Today on Waifu Wednesday, Kiryu Coco from the fourth generation of Hololive! The most outgoing member of generation five, if not Hololive as a whole, Coco has captured hearts of both Japanese fans and the “overseas bros” and it’s not hard to see why.

I know what you’re all thinking, we literally just did a Hololive character last week; and you’d be right. I try to keep VTubers to once a month for Waifu Wednesday. But with the recent news of Coco’s impending graduation it’s hard not to think about her.

Coco is largely known for her model’s outrageous curves with many fans joking that her hips were “Made in America” (a reference to the fact that her actress was allegedly born and raised in Georgia… we’ll talk more about her at the end of the column).

Coco debuted as part of Hololive’s fourth generation back in December of 2019 and quickly skyrocketed to popularity with her bilingual talents. Her sense of humor helped her push the envelope for a Japanese idol with her English swearing, constant vulgarity, and irreverent humor which endeared her even more towards her fans and even her fellow Holomembers who enjoyed her antics.

A native English speaker, Coco speaks with a thick accent in Japanese which has also bled over into her English due to her long stay in Japan where she presumably speaks mostly (if not exclusively) Japanese in her daily life. This has given her a highly recognizable voice.

Going back to what I mentioned earlier about her actress. Normally it’s taboo to discuss a Holomember’s previous/alternate identity. But I’m making the personal decision to include it here. The risk of Coco’s fans not finding her again after her graduation is worse than remaining silent. Unfortunately due to the nature of Hololive and the idol business, this connection has never been officially confirmed, I’ll leave it to viewers to make their own informed decision and hopefully they will continue to support Kson ONAIR, a YouTube personality who sounds remarkably like Kiryu Coco.

From us here at Nicchiban, we’ll miss you Coco and we’re looking forward to new content from Kson ONAIR.
