High Guardian Spice First Animated Trailer Revealed

High Guardian Spice

Crunchyroll have revealed a new trailer for High Guardian Spice, showing the the first animation for the show.

High Guardian Spice is coming soon to Crunchyroll.

The anime-inspired show was announced in 2018; with a vocal audience against it. Many rejected it for the characters’ “bean-mouth” design; a criticism of then recent western cartoons using simplified designs and flat colors to save money on production. Others were concerned the show would funnel money that could have otherwise support Japanese animators whose works Crunchyroll had licensed.

In November 2019, Anime director and character designer Terumi Nishii has stated in an interview that despite claims by some western companies giving large investment or support to the anime industry, that the animators themselves had not noticed any major changes.

The show resurfaced in 2020 as Crunchyroll announced that High Spice Guardian was part of eight Crunchyroll Originals– shows produced or co-produced by them. News was quiet on the show after this, leading to our April Fools 2021 article on Western Remake of Endro Still Hasn’t Released.

Prior trailers had discussed the development and concept of the show, and how the production team was 50% female staffed, and an all-woman writing team. While the Cruncyroll Originals trailer showed a snippet of animation, this new trailer is the first High Guardian Spice trailer focused on showing the series in action.

Using almost purely digitally hand-drawn 2D animation, the show tells the story of four young girls attending a school to become guardians; defending the magical city of Lyngarth. Heavily inspired by magical-girl anime, the four not only learn more about defending others, but more about themselves as well.

You can find the official trailer and rundown (via Crunchyroll) below

The lives of four fierce girls converge at High Guardian Academy, the one place where they can stumble comically toward adulthood while becoming the heroes they’ve always admired. As they master the ways of battle and sorcery, the foursome form allegiances, uncover legacies, face betrayals and discover their true identities while preparing to protect the world from an ominous unknown threat.
